At Saints Services, we provide industry-leading construction solutions focused on delivering high-quality concrete flatwork and superior backyard transformations. Our commitment to excellence ensures that every project meets rigorous structural standards while enhancing the aesthetic value of your property.

But honestly? Let me just level with you for a second, because building a patio is about so much more than just pouring some wet mix on the ground and calling it a day. I’ve been in the Construction game for a long time now and I’ve seen it all, from the DIY disasters that look like a cracked desert floor after one winter to the high-end projects that literally change how a family lives their life every single day. I didn't make money for over 6 years when I first started out because I was too busy learning the Hard Way about what happens when you cut corners, and believe me, you don't want to learn those lessons on your own dime.

When you start thinking about a New Backyard Patio, it’s easy to get lost in the Pinterest boards and the fancy furniture catalogs, but the Process is where the magic (or the nightmare) really happens. We have yet to fail a inspection or deadline because we obsess over the details that most people don't even see until it's too late. So, if you’re looking to turn that patch of grass into something Real, here are the 5 things you absolutely have to know before the trucks show up.

1. Site Preparation is Everything (And I Mean Everything)

If you think a patio starts with Concrete, you’re already behind the 8-ball. A great patio starts with dirt, or more specifically, getting the dirt out of the way. I remember this one job we did where the homeowner had tried to lay some pavers themselves the year before and they didn't understand why the whole thing was sinking into the earth like some kind of ancient ruin, and it’s because they didn't spend the time on the Sub-base.

You have to excavate. You have to get down deep enough to put in a solid layer of compacted gravel or road base. If the ground underneath isn't stable, it doesn't matter if you use the most expensive materials in the world, because the earth is going to move and your patio is going to crack. We use heavy-duty compactors to make sure that ground is as hard as a rock before we even think about the next step. It’s loud, it’s dusty, and it’s the most important part of the whole job.

People always ask me if they can just "pour over" what's already there and usually the answer is a big fat NO. You need a clean slate. We take site prep so seriously at Saints Services because we want your patio to last longer than your mortgage, and that only happens if the foundation is Perfect. Nobody is perfect, but we get pretty dang close when it comes to compaction. So, are you ready to see some dirt fly?

2. Why Concrete is the King of Materials

Look, I know there are a lot of options out there like wood decks or natural stone or those little plastic tiles, but Concrete has to be my favored trade for a reason. It is the ultimate chameleon. You want it to look like stone? We can stamp it. You want it to be sleek and modern? We can give it a smooth, minimalist finish. But the Real reason I love it is the Durability.

When we do concrete flatwork, we aren't just making a floor; we’re making a structural slab. Unlike wood, it isn't going to rot or get infested by termites, and unlike pavers, you aren't going to have weeds growing up through the cracks three months from now because there are no cracks for them to grow through! We use high-quality mixes that are designed to handle the weather here, and we know exactly how to handle the cure times so the finish stays beautiful.

I’ve spent years perfecting the mix designs we use because I realized early on that not all Concrete is created equal. Some guys use too much water because it's easier to spread, but then the surface scales and peels off in two years. We keep it simple and we keep it strong. It’s an art form, honestly, watching the guys finish a large pour and seeing that surface turn into a glass-smooth or perfectly broomed finish. Why would you settle for anything less?

3. Durability Comes From the Inside Out

This is the technical stuff that usually bores people until their patio splits in half. You have to talk about Reinforcement. At Saints Services, we don't just pour mud; we build a skeleton. Whether it’s rebar or wire mesh, you need something inside that Concrete to hold it together when the ground shifts: and the ground will shift. It’s just what the earth does.

I’ve walked onto so many sites where the previous contractor just threw some mesh on the ground and poured over it, but if that mesh is sitting on the dirt, it’s doing absolutely nothing. It has to be pulled up into the center of the slab to actually provide strength. We use chairs and spacers to make sure the reinforcement is exactly where it needs to be. It’s those little Things that make a huge difference ten years down the road.

We also talk to our clients about thickness. A standard patio might be 4 inches, but if you’re planning on putting a massive hot tub or a heavy stone outdoor kitchen on there, you might need 6 inches or more. We do the math so you don't have to. It's about being Professional and making sure the job is done right the first time so you never have to call us back for a repair. Don't you want peace of mind?

4. Drainage: Don't Flood Your Foundation

This is the one that gets people every time. You think your backyard is flat? It’s not. Or if it is, you actually don't want it to be! If a patio is perfectly level, the water just sits there, or worse, it runs back toward your house and ends up in your basement or crawling under your siding. I’ve seen beautiful homes get ruined by bad drainage on a simple patio project.

We use lasers. Seriously. We set up laser levels to make sure that the patio has a slight "pitch": usually about a quarter inch per foot: so that when it rains, the water flows away from your home and out into the yard where it belongs. It’s a bit of a balancing act because you don't want to feel like you're sitting on a hill, but you also don't want a swimming pool on your porch.

Using a professional laser level to ensure proper backyard grading and patio drainage planning.

I spent a whole summer once just studying how water moves across different surfaces because I was so tired of seeing "pro" jobs with puddles in the middle. Now, it's second nature to us. We look at the whole landscape, the gutters, the downspouts, everything. We want your backyard to be a sanctuary, not a swamp. Doesn't that sound better?

5. The Importance of Professional Installation

I’m all for a good DIY project: I really am: but a concrete patio is a one-shot deal. Once that truck pulls into the driveway and starts pouring, the clock is ticking. You have a very limited amount of time to get that Concrete flat, finished, and edged before it gets too hard to work with. I’ve seen guys lose a whole slab because they didn't have enough hands on deck or they didn't know how to read the weather.

When you hire a pro team like us, you’re paying for the years of mistakes we’ve already made and learned from. You’re paying for the specialized tools: the power screeds, the bull floats, the edgers: that make the difference between a "backyard project" and a "masterpiece." We show up, we work hard, and we get out of your hair, leaving you with something you can actually be proud of.

I’ve had clients tell me they were going to do it themselves to save a few bucks, and then they call me three weeks later when they realize they can't even get the forms straight. It happens to the best of us! But save yourself the stress. We love what we do, and we’re good at it.
